Image optimisation should make a site lighter, not worse to look at.

Use the right source image, deliver a sensible size and choose modern formats where they improve the real experience.

Start with an image worth keeping.

Compression cannot rescue a blurry, badly cropped or irrelevant source image. Use an image whose dimensions suit its intended visual role and keep original assets available for future formats or crops.

Choose formats based on the image.

WebP and AVIF can reduce transfer size substantially, but visual quality still needs checking. Photographs, screenshots and illustrations respond differently. Use a quality setting that protects the meaningful detail, especially text inside product screenshots.

Deliver only the pixels the device needs.

Use responsive image variants and width and height attributes. Preload only the important first visual. Lazy-load offscreen images and never defer an image that determines the first meaningful view.

Measure the page, not just the file.

Track the live impact on loading, layout stability and image quality. PageSpeed data is a separate measured provider signal; do not blend it into an SEO action score.
